Nestled in the heart of Wasilla, Alaska, Trout House / Windbreak Cafe / Hotel stands out as a cherished family restaurant that has earned its reputation through decades of heartfelt service and consistently delicious food. This welcoming spot exudes a cozy, country-cottage atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home, making it an ideal destination for families and locals alike who seek both comfort and quality on their plates.

The menu at Trout House offers an impressive selection that caters to diverse tastes, with an emphasis on hearty, satisfying fare. Salad lovers will find themselves tempted by the Sirloin Salad, a generous $24 plate brimming with tender, perfectly seared sirloin slices atop fresh greens. The Mexicali Salad and Taco Salad, each at $21, burst with vibrant textures and zesty flavors, while the Zesty Chicken Salad and Chef Salad provide lighter, yet equally delightful options. Each salad is thoughtfully crafted to strike the perfect balance between freshness and boldness.

The true stars on the menu, however, might just be the Prime & Beef Dips—robust, savory sandwiches that deliver a rich taste experience. The Black Onion Jack Dip ($24) and Blackened Prime Steak Dip ($22) are particularly indulgent, filled with tender, juicy cuts and smothered in flavorful sauces that melt in your mouth. The French Dip and Philly Dip also impress with their traditional yet satisfying flavors, making them perfect choices for lunch or dinner.

No meal here is complete without sampling one of their irresistible sweet desserts. The Chocolate Cream Pie and Lemon Berry Marscapone, both priced at $11, offer a perfect finishing touch with their creamy textures and harmonious layers of flavor. For those craving classic comfort, the moist Carrot Cake and rich Chocolate Cake provide a nostalgic sweetness, while the warm Cinnamon Roll and homemade Apple Pie evoke memories of cozy family gatherings.

Customer reviews paint a vivid picture of the Trout House experience, highlighting the friendliness of the staff and the genuine hospitality that the restaurant extends to every guest. Sondra Harrison praises the place for its welcoming vibe and strong drinks, while Rick D confidently calls it “the best breakfast spot in the Mat Su Valley,” applauding its lengthy breakfast hours and consistently excellent food. David McDaniel’s nod to the fresh, homemade chicken strips and exceptional cocktails underscores the care and quality that define the kitchen’s approach.

While some note that the interior feels dated, the cozy and inviting ambiance remains undeniable, reminiscent of a rustic Alaskan cottage where family and tradition meet. The true value here lies in its authentic Alaskan charm combined with consistently well-prepared dishes that keep visitors coming back time and again.

Whether you’re craving a leisurely breakfast, a robust sandwich, or a comforting dessert, Trout House / Windbreak Cafe / Hotel offers a satisfying, heartfelt dining experience that is both rich in flavor and rich in local character. Great place with friendly people. Food was great and the drinks were strong. Family friendly. Loved it. Would go back for sure.

Service is great! The food comes out quick and it's delicious. The staff are really friendly. The decor is really cozy. Feels like a country style cottage. Recommend coming here for breakfast. Haven't tried lunch or dinner yet but I plan to

Chicken strips were fresh homemade and very good. The pancakes breakfast was also very good. Excellent bloody Mary's and Screwdrivers!

My favorite breakfast spot in the mat Su valley hands down. You can get breakfast till 5PM. Servers are always friendly , seldom do you have to send anything back. I’ve tried lots on their menu over the years and it’s all good. Even if the parking lot looks full there is still plenty of seating. By far the best breakfast in the valley

Been going here since I was a kid. Good values, good food. If it's not to your preference, just talk it out. Chances are though the foods perfect. Now as for the food I eat here, I used to always get the sirloin but I was feeling the culture and decided to go with some reindeer. Rudolf was delicious. English muffin perfect.. potato's crispy.. my friend got the homindays sauce with a custom order of no meat and it looked perfect. She ate it super fast. Now my final part of the review I'll focus on this innovative booth chair. Feel the preasure of being the poor guy who doesn't get a both seat be gone... Why there isn't more media centered around this booth chair weird..

We are here when it was THE restaurant in Wasilla. Food, service and atmosphere still authentically Alaskan. Don’t miss this gem!

I found a fantastic spot for breakfast that truly exceeded my expectations. Their menu is incredibly varied, offering something for everyone, from classic favorites to unique dishes that are both satisfying and flavorful. The food is always fresh, perfectly cooked, and served in generous portions. What truly stood out to me was the warm and inviting atmosphere—it felt like a home away from home. The staff are friendly and attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a comfortable place to enjoy a delicious breakfast, this is definitely the place to visit. I'll be returning soon!

Interior definitely needs refreshing. It's dated and feels old & dirty. Prices for breakfast seemed high. But service was great and food was delicious!
